10 Dallas-area baseball players to watch in the 2024 MLB draft

Here are 10 Dallas-area baseball players at the high school and college levels to watch out for in the MLB draft, which begins Sunday at Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth.

Wyatt Sanford, SS, Frisco Independence

Baseball America rankings: 42 rankings: 35

Summary: Sanford has been on draft boards this spring after a strong senior season at Independence. The Texas A&M signee (and son of former major league infielder Chance Sanford) is “one of the top defensive shortstops in the 2024 high school class,” according to MLB Pipeline. He was a Baseball America second-team high school All-American and a Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association first-team All-State honoree this season.

Dasan Hill, LHP, Grapevine

Summary: Hill led Grapevine to a 5A state championship last spring and was selected Dallas Morning News Player of the year for what he does. The Dallas Baptist signee has struck out 155 batters in 77 and 2/3 innings and has a 10-0 record with a 0.99 ERA. His fastball is in the high 90s and has reached 96 mph this season, and according to MLB Pipeline, he is the best left-handed pitching prospect to come out of the Texas preseason roster since Jesuit’s Kyle Muller in 2016.

Dallas Morning News 2024 Baseball Player of the Year: Grapevine’s Dasan Hill

Kevin Bazzell, C, Texas Tech

Baseball America rankings: 68 rank: 55

Summary: Bazzell, a Rockwall-Heath graduate, News’ He was the 2021 offensive player of the year before signing with Dallas Baptist. He transferred to Texas Tech before his sophomore season of college baseball and was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and multiple freshman All-American lists. In two seasons with the Red Raiders, Bazzell slashed .330/.401/.473 with 16 total home runs, 37 doubles and 94 RBI.

Jared Thomas, 1B/OF, Texas

Baseball America rankings: 58 rank: 60

Summary: Thomas pitched one no-hitter in his final season at Waxahachie, but he did the most damage with his bat for the Longhorns. Thomas batted .349/.434/.635 with 16 home runs, 15 doubles and four triples in his second season at Texas, and according to Baseball America, he has “a versatile profile that should make him a day one pick.”

Ryan Prager, Left-Handed Pitcher, Texas A&M

Baseball America rankings: 66 rank: 61

Summary: Prager topped his senior season at Hillcrest with a 9-2 record, 0.44 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. News’ He was first team all-field in 2021. The left-hander carried that dominance to College Station, leading the Aggies to the College World Series this June, compiling a 9-1 record with a 2.95 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 97 and 2/3 innings pitched.

Griffin Herring, Left-Handed Pitcher, LSU

Summary: Herring led Southlake Carroll to 6A state championship in 2022 and was selected News’ He was named Player of the Year his senior season after posting a 0.24 ERA and 145 strikeouts in 87 innings. He struck out 71 batters in 39 playoff innings that year, then posted a 3.93 ERA in 34 and 1/3 innings for the national champion Tigers in his freshman year at LSU in 2023. He was named a second-team All-American this spring, thanks in large part to a 1.79 ERA in 21 games coming out of LSU’s bullpen.

Jason Flores, Right-Handed Pitcher, Garland Naaman Forest

Baseball America rankings: 143 rank: 190

Summary: Flores — a member of the Texas Rangers’ Youth Academy — has signed to play at the collegiate level in Texas, but is considered “extremely signable,” according to MLB Pipeline. He has a fastball that runs in the mid-90s and can reach 96 mph, and a low-90s sinker to pair with it. He earned second-team all-field honors News In his third season, he had a . 561 batting average, 5 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs and a 20-5 walk-to-strikeout ratio.

Ryan Johnson, Right-Handed Pitcher, Dallas Baptist

Baseball America rankings: 46 rank: 47

Summary: Johnson — a Red Oak native who played for the Home School Texas Alliance for Christian Athletes Storm in high school — was named a third-team All-American in his sophomore season at Dallas Baptist and played on USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team the previous summer. He produced a 2.21 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 16 games for Dallas Baptist this spring and could pass Vic Black (49th overall in 2009) as the highest draft pick in school history.

Sawyer Farr, SS, Fort Worth Boswell

Baseball America rankings: 76 rank: 91

Summary: Farr, the third overall pick in this year’s draft behind Sanford and Hill, is a Dallas-Fort Worth high school senior who has “an exciting package of tools and athleticism to go along with his long frame,” according to Baseball America, and has signed to play at Texas A&M.

Cade Crossland, Left Handed Pitcher, Weatherford JC

Baseball America rankings: 487 rankings: 241

Summary: Crossland pitched a no-hitter against Waco Midway to lead Rockwall to the 6A bi-district round his senior season two years ago, and now — after one season at Division II Ouachita Baptist and one at Weatherford JC — he will either play professionally next season or transfer to Oklahoma. The 6-foot-2-inch left-hander had a 2.37 ERA in 68 and 1/3 innings pitched last season at Weatherford.
