Adventure awaits, surprisingly close to home

It’s not uncommon for individuals to think that the best vacation adventure involves traveling far away. But there are plenty of exciting ways to get your kicks even if you don’t stray too far from home. Here’s how to plan a summer adventure in your own neighborhood.

Visit an amusement or theme park. Spending a day or two at a theme park or amusement park can introduce travelers to different rides, sights, attractions, food and people. Six Flags Entertainment Corporation operates 27 parks across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Water parks, summer carnivals and local theme parks are also great for fun outings.

Climb to great heights. Find out which is the highest peak in your area and then climb to the top of that lookout. Most of the highest peaks in North America are on the border between the states of Alaska and Canada, but there are plenty of high elevations elsewhere on the continent as well.

Try a new food. Experience a new culture by visiting a restaurant that serves food from a country you’ve never been to. You can earn even more points if you choose an ingredient that’s new to you.

Go rafting or tubing. The power of moving water is impressive. Rafting and tubing allow people to experience rapids and the scenery as it zips by. Choose a pace that works for you and increase your drift size and speed as you gain more experience.

Try a new water sport. Stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking can be fun ways to enjoy the water. Not only are they great adventure activities, they’re also solid workouts for many body parts.

Go fishing. Fishing may seem like a slow-paced sport, but your adrenaline will soon be pumping as you try to catch a monster catch and a fish bite. Some of the best times to fish are at dawn and dusk when the fish are more likely to strike.

Swim in the ocean. Head to the shore and dive through the waves. Summer months are a great time to dive as the ocean water reaches a more comfortable swimming temperature. Always swim where lifeguards are posted and be sure to check for red flag warnings for rip currents or rough surf. Also watch out for marine life.

Watch a baseball game. Buy tickets to a game at a stadium near you and support the team along with thousands of other fans. In addition to watching Major League Baseball, there are also many minor league teams with impressive stadiums. Tickets for minor league games can be easier to find and may be easier on your wallet.
