What is the story?

The 2024 Paris Olympics will begin on July 26, with a total of 184 countries participating in the tournament.

Athletes from around the world will compete for 329 gold medals in 32 sports.

There are a few Indians among the athletes to watch out for. Expectations are high for the country’s hockey team.

Let’s figure out India’s medal count in field hockey.

Eight gold medals in hockey

Eight of India’s 10 gold medals came in men’s hockey, including one silver and three bronze medals.

The 1928 Amsterdam Olympics marked the beginning of the sensational run of the Indian hockey team.

Under Dhyan Chand’s leadership, India won its first Olympic gold medal by scoring 29 goals and conceding none.

Indian hockey team’s dominance

The Indian hockey team won gold medals in a memorable trilogy by triumphing at the Los Angeles 1932 Olympics and the Berlin 1936 Olympics.

After the Olympics could not be held in 1940 and 1944 due to World War II, the 1948 London Games were the first event organised by India as an independent country.

The hockey team continued its dominance once again by winning its fourth Olympic gold.

Sixth consecutive gold in hockey

The Indian hockey team repeated the same feat in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics.

The country has now won six consecutive Olympic gold medals in hockey.

The hockey team narrowly missed out on a seventh consecutive title in 1960 when Pakistan beat them in the final.

However, the Indian hockey team once again emerged victorious in the 1964 event.

The pause before the victory in 1980

The 1968 Mexico Olympics were the first Olympics in which India failed to finish in the top two.

They were content with a bronze medal. India won the bronze medal once again at the Munich 1972 Olympics.

The team achieved a jaw-dropping seventh place at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Despite this, the Indian hockey team became Olympic champions once again at the 1980 Moscow Games.

41 years of drought

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics marked the beginning of the Indian hockey team’s medal drought at the Olympics.

The team did not even qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

India returned to the 2012 London Games but finished 12th (last) that year.

The Indian hockey team ended its 41-year Olympic medal drought by winning the bronze medal in 2020.

What about the women’s team?

An Olympic medal is still a given for the Indian women’s hockey team. The team achieved its best finish to date with a fourth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Notably, the women’s hockey team returned to the Olympics in 2016 after last appearing in the event in 1980.
