Baseball: Bob Montbriand to be inducted into Alexandria Youth Baseball Association Hall of Fame – Alexandria Echo Press

ALEXANDRIA — The Alexandria Youth Baseball Association is proud to announce the induction of Bob Montbriand into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Bob’s family will accept his award at an induction ceremony on Monday, August 5th at 5:00 p.m. in the Broadway Ballroom.

Bob loved sports. He was active in athletics at Faribault High School, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He went on to the University of St. Thomas on a baseball scholarship, where he also played basketball. He continued to play baseball, basketball, and fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball until he felt he was no longer competitive; he then began sharing his knowledge, competitiveness, enthusiasm, and love of the game by coaching and refereeing.

Bob coached the Alexandria Legion Baseball team for 15 years, achieving over 300 wins. During that time, he positively touched the lives of many young Alexandria baseball players. He was also a very successful coach of the Alexandria Technical College men’s basketball team, achieving several state tournament wins.

Bob was an active player in the sports of football, softball, baseball, basketball and girls fastpitch softball. He was known as “one of the best.” Rarely did a coach or player disagree with a decision Bob made on the field or court.

Bob’s “day job” was also athletic, selling sporting goods, first at Gary Schroeder Sports in Long Prairie, then Fitzharris Sports in St. Cloud, and eventually running Bob’s Sport Shop from his home. His numerous sports connections throughout a wide area of Minnesota made his job easy and enjoyable.

When he wasn’t coaching or officiating, Bob could be found at his children’s games, various sporting events, watching sports on television, or playing racquetball with his friends.

Bob passed away in March 2017, leaving behind his wife Cindy, daughters Marcy, Alicia and Kelli, sons Jim and Matt, their spouses and numerous grandchildren.

The AYBA banquet, “Celebrating Alexandria Baseball: Past, Present and Future,” will not only honor Bob Montbriand and induct him into the Alexandria Baseball Hall of Fame; the event will also feature awards and recognition for the 2024 Alexandria Cardinal Varsity baseball players and our senior and junior legion baseball players.

Tickets are $20.00 and can be ordered in advance by calling Judy Backhaus at 320-815-8253. Tickets are $25.00 if purchased at the door the same evening.

According to an Echo Press staff report

Our newsroom occasionally reports news with a “staff” byline. Typically, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news summaries from official sources; for example, a city press release about a road closure that requires little or no reporting. Sometimes, this byline is used when a news story involves multiple writers or when the story is created by piecing together previously reported news from multiple sources. If outside sources are used, they are acknowledged in the story.
