Nigeria to face Kenya in bilateral series

Nigeria’s The Yellow Greens, the senior men’s cricket team, will be in Kenya to face the Simbas in a seven-day bilateral series from Friday, July 12 to July 20. PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The series will be played in T20 and ODI formats with five matches in the former and two in the latter.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation on Wednesday announced the 15-man squad for the series, which includes captain Sylvester Okpe, accompanied by the trio of Isaac Okpe, Isaac Danladi and Emmanuel Udekwe, who are currently competing in the Zimbabwe National Premier League.

These include Peter Aho, who was once in the Guinness World Records for fastest bowler, wicketkeeper Sulaimon Runsewe, Elijah Olaleye, Daniel Ajeku, Abdulmumuni Mohammed, Prosper Useni, Joshua Asia and Vincent Adewoye.

In addition, three goalkeepers, Selim Salau, Ifeanyi Uboh and Miracle Akhigbe, were recalled to the squad.

“This series promises to showcase the skills and competitive spirit of the Nigerian cricket team as they take on their Kenyan opponents,” the NCF said in a statement on Wednesday.

“These fast-paced T20 matches will showcase the skill and agility of both teams. Expect exciting moments, big hits and tight finishes, and the two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) will provide a different dynamic with longer innings and strategic play.”

Nigeria’s head coach and high-performance coach, former Kenyan player Steve Tikolo and his technical staff are hoping to capitalise on this series to strengthen the team for the upcoming competitive matches.

The Kenya/Nigeria double series will be the Yellow-Greens’ first major assignment since securing a place at the 2023 African Games earlier this year.
