Vasseur leaks details about length of Hamilton’s Ferrari F1 contract – Motorsport Week

Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur has announced that Lewis Hamilton’s first Formula 1 contract with the brand, which will start in 2025, will cover three seasons.

Hamilton has shocked the F1 world by announcing his move to Ferrari before the season even starts.

The English player signed a new deal with Mercedes in September last year, valid until 2025, but it turned out that an exit clause was added to the agreement that would make his transfer easier.

Hamilton is reportedly unhappy with Mercedes not giving him a long-term contract extension, with technical director Toto Wolff saying the choice was mutual.

Ferrari’s statement confirming the reunion of the series’ most successful driver and team said Hamilton will join next season on a multi-year deal.

But Vasseur, who worked with the seven-time F1 champion in GP2 in 2006, said Hamilton had signed a three-year deal with the Maranello squad.

“He had a choice to make: ‘Where do I have the best chance of winning the World Championship in 2025, ’26, ’27?’ ‘Ferrari,’ he said,” Vasseur told the Financial Times.

Vasseur declined to comment on Hamilton’s transfer to Ferrari.

Vassuer also reiterated his stance that Hamilton’s arrival would be “the best way to attract good people” as Ferrari seeks to strengthen its technical staff.

Hamilton will join Ferrari after ending his long race drought with a race win at Silverstone last weekend.

Vasseur expressed his satisfaction with Hamilton’s victory, saying the French driver would have preferred Carlos Sainz, who has left Ferrari, to take the victory.

“First of all, I would have been happier to give Carlos confidence this weekend,” Vasseur claimed. “No, no, but Lewis will have time to discuss it.

“I am happy for him because I think he deserves it, but next year we will have time to talk about Lewis.

“That’s not the topic today. No, I have nothing to say about Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes.”
