New Zealand tennis players Sun and Routliffe win lifetime tickets to Wimbledon

The New Zealand flag continues to fly at Wimbledon as New Zealand doubles players Erin Routliffe and Michael Venus advance to their respective doubles semifinals and, as a duo, to the mixed doubles semifinals.

Routliffe also joins fellow Kiwi Lulu Sun in joining an exclusive club reserved for singles quarter-finalists and doubles semi-finalists.

Known as the “Last 8 Club,” members of this club receive privileges such as a lifetime ticket for two to Wimbledon, a private hospitality suite and an invitation to a cocktail party on the second Tuesday of the tournament.

Routliffe told 1News that he didn’t know what the invitation contained, “he just got it,” and laughed.

“If I have a daughter, I can take her with me and say, ‘My mother did this.'”

The bigger prizes she was after were the Wimbledon title with her Canadian women’s doubles partner Gabi Dabrowski and her New Zealand mixed doubles partner Venus.

Routliffe played in both quarterfinals in a row, spending five hours on court in total and finishing around 23:00 local time.

“It was definitely one of the greatest tennis days of my life.”

He said Wimbledon was the tournament he “dreamed about” when he was a little kid.

“It’s exciting to make it to the last eight.”
