Retired ‘Her Indoors’ prepares to perform tyre drag race in memory of deceased husband

Elaine Southworth, who lives near Bewdley in south Shropshire, has been involved in high-octane motorsport for more than 40 years.

But his involvement in family team Daddy Cool will undergo a major change when he takes the driving seat later this year.

It follows in the tyre tracks of Dave ‘Sag’ Southworth, who died of a rare form of cancer in August 2017.

“He always said how proud he was of everything we did, and to that end we’re still here, still doing it, still having fun together,” Ms. Southworth said.

Their children Shana, Kyle, Faye, Chloe and their wives Jamie, Becky, Ste and Andy have different roles in the team.

Faye uses the Daddy Cool machine, which her father has used since August 1989, while Kyle uses the Big Bro.

Miss Southworth will be climbing the Her Indoors at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue, with the popular Santa Pod Raceway a likely first destination, and is expected to cover the quarter-mile in under 11 seconds.

“I have no competitive racing experience, so this will be my first time racing in my 60s,” he said.

“All members of our family bring their own unique qualities, and the combination of our talents has allowed Sag’s project to continue.

The overall look of the team is more modern and looks to surpass the times and speeds achieved by Sag.

“With Faye as Daddy Cool’s driver, we all hope to make Sag proud for a long time to come. He always told us how proud he was of everything we did, and to that end, we’re still here, still doing it, still having fun together.”

“When things go wrong in drag racing, it usually has very bad consequences, but because safety is paramount and on everyone’s mind, there are many things you can do to avoid dangerous situations as much as possible,” he said.

“I think the whole family, especially our longtime friend Alan Grimes, is working to continue Sag’s legacy.

“Sag always talked about Daddy Cool as a project and tried to constantly improve the engineering of the car.”
