Going boating, sledding or water skiing this summer? For every minute you spend on the water, this app donates $1 to St. Jude

One way to beat the heat this summer? Get out in the water and play.

Surfing is America’s fastest-growing water sport, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. And during the summer months, wakesurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, paddle boarding and tubing are gaining popularity on lakes and waterways across the country.

But this summer, you can do good things during you’re having fun on the water.

For the second year in a row, boat company MasterCraft has partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to add a special feature to the MasterCraft Connect app.

Now users can track their water sports activities, and for every minute recorded, Mastercraft will donate $1 to pediatric cancer research.

“As boat owners head out on the water this summer, we encourage them to download the app and log their time doing their favorite boating activities and help us raise money for St. Jude,” said Krista Schipner, MasterCraft’s chief marketing officer, in a press release.

Seven-time world wakeboard champion Meagan Ethell also joined in promoting the “Surf to Save Lives” campaign.

“What’s great about this campaign is you don’t even need a MasterCraft (boat) to participate in the campaign,” Ethell told FOX 35 Orlando.

“All you have to do is get the MasterCraft app and record all the action on the water. It’s a really easy way to be a part of this campaign.”

While St. Jude is not immune to criticism, the nonprofit has been providing free cancer treatment to children around the world for decades. What’s more, its research hospitals have been instrumental in increasing the childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80% since 1962.

Professional wakeboarder Alexa Score is the spokesperson for MasterCraft’s campaign. A childhood leukemia survivor, Score said she feels a deep passion for the cause and that it is “near and dear to her heart.”

“We ran a very successful campaign last year, and I hope more people will join me this year by downloading the MasterCraft Connect app and getting out on the water to help St. Jude fulfill its mission,” Score said in a press release.

“Together we can make a difference.”

MasterCraft aims to reach last year’s donation of $75,000 through app tracking.

The campaign will continue until October 1, 2024.
