LAS VEGAS – The U.S. men’s basketball team, playing together for the first time as part of preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeated Canada 86-72 in a friendly match on Wednesday.

American player Anthony Edwards produced 13 points, Steph Curry 12 points, Anthony Davis 10 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. LeBron James played with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 19 minutes, while Jrue Holiday produced 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks.

The United States is expected to win its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal, while Canada, which has NBA successes including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murry and RJ Barrett, is aiming for its first Olympic podium since winning silver in 1936.

The U.S. will play Australia (July 15) and Serbia (July 17) in Abu Dhabi and South Sudan (July 20) and Germany (July 22) in London to prepare for the Olympics. The U.S. will open the Olympics against Serbia on July 28.

It was a good start to the exhibition schedule, considering the U.S. athletes have only trained together four times and Canada’s medal potential.

In the match where USA Coach Steve Kerr started with James, Curry, Holiday, Devin Booker and Joel Embiid in the first 11, the Americans fell behind 11-1.

But Kerr had the luxury that no other team had: his next five were Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Bam Adebayo, Davis and Tyrese Haliburton. They helped spark a 14-3 run for a 28-23 U.S. lead.

The U.S. led 41-33 at halftime and Curry made nine straight 3-pointers, including two, to take a 50-37 lead. Edwards’ last-second 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter gave the U.S. a 69-54 lead.

The Americans showed much-needed size and defense. They outrebounded Canada 53-48, blocked nine shots and limited Canada to 33.8 percent shooting. The U.S. made just 7 of 23 three-pointers but shot 50.7 percent from the field.

The United States has 10 players remaining. Kevin Durant missed the match due to calf pain and the United States added Derrick White, who will join the team in Abu Dhabi, to replace Kawhi Leonard.

Barrett led Canada with 12 points, while Dillon Brooks and Gilgeous-Alexander each scored 10 points.
