Mostert: “Ireland will come back stronger”

The experienced Bok lock said the teams facing Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday need to focus particularly on breakdowns and turnovers.

The Springboks won their opening match 27-20 at Loftus Versfeld – South Africa’s first win against Ireland since 2016 – and will be looking for their second consecutive win this weekend. Mostert agrees with his team-mates and coaches that it will again require a big effort from the team.

“We certainly don’t think last week’s win was a situation where we got the monkey off our back,” Mostert said.

“They feel the same way we did at the Rugby World Cup and we saw what that first defeat did for us on the British & Irish Lions tour (in 2021). So they will come back stronger and it will be a good test for us.”

Focusing on the match, Mostert was expecting another big forward challenge: “They did a good job stopping our mauls last week and they’re a team that usually doesn’t give away a lot of maul attempts. So hopefully we can come up with some plans this weekend.

“Faf (de Klerk) and Grant (Williams) came under pressure in the slumps, so as a team we need to improve in that area this weekend as well.”

Mostert was pleased with the impact his bomb squad had in Pretoria – particularly the pressing scrum that earned the Boks a penalty try – and said: “I get goosebumps when I think about it. Coach Daan (Human – scrum coach) works so hard to make the scrums work well and it’s great to see the rewards.”

Mostert, who has played 75 Test matches and won two Rugby World Cup medals before coming into the game, said it would be great to continue his run in the green and gold and was realistic about his place in the squad as Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus begins to build his squad for the 2027 RWC in Australia.

“Every player has their own personal goals and I personally plan to do that every year,” said the hard-working forward. “As long as my body can handle it, I will play until I am no longer eligible. But playing in three RWCs would be very special.”

The match will start at 17:00 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
