Washington Sundar comments on becoming the ‘Next Ravindra Jadeja’ for India in T20I cricket

Ravindra Jadeja may have retired from T20I cricket. But India are yet to find a replacement for the veteran all-rounder. “Sir” Jadeja has been a winning factor for the Blue Men in numerous matches, sometimes with the bat, sometimes with the ball and sometimes with both.

Washington Sundar has been seen as a potential replacement since Jaddu’s retirement. While India have a spinner-all-rounder in the form of Axar Patel, the buzz grew louder after the Tamil Nadu all-rounder took 3/15 in four overs against Zimbabwe on July 10. India lead the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe 2-1.

After the match, Sundar was asked if he would be included in the Indian squad as a replacement for Jadeja.

“I have to do well where I’m good and where I can do well, especially with my preparation. I have to give 100 percent every day. That’s something I’m not compromising on,” Washington said.

“It keeps me in the present and obviously I am very confident. It is a great opportunity for me to play for India and I am blessed with it. I have to keep working steadily, keep preparing and keep getting better. That way everything will be taken care of,” he said.

Washington Sundar statistics

In Test cricket, Washington Sundar is more successful with the bat. He has scored 265 runs in 4 Tests and has an average of 66.2. His highest score in Test cricket is 96*. He has taken 6 Test wickets so far.

In ODIs, he has taken 265 runs and 18 wickets in 19 matches. In T20Is, Washington has taken 134 runs and 40 wickets in 46 matches. In 60 IPL matches so far, the all-rounder has taken 60 wickets and 378 runs.

Initially a batsman before trying out off-spin, Washington Sundar played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). This year, he got very little chance with the bat as he faced only 1 ball and didn’t score any runs. In fact, he didn’t need to because SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma broke records one after another with their devastating batting. He played only 2 matches, bowled 5 overs and took 1 wicket.

Ravindra Jadeja has scored 515 runs and taken 54 wickets in 74 T20I cricket matches.
